What's so special about April in Meggett?

The month of April contains many eco-conscious observance days such as National Gardening Day, Earth Day, and Arbor Day. In the Town of Meggett, we encourage our residents to excel at being great stewards of our sensitive coastal environment; this focus on preservation and renourishment is vital to the sustainability of Meggett and the quality-of-life our residents currently experience. Find out below how you can help the Town of Meggett reach our goal!

Nature Needs You

We have years, not decades, to solve the climate and biodiversity crises. We can get there, but only if we work together. There are so many ways you can get involved and do your part to support a world where people and nature thrive together. Join us today!

Help Preserve and Renourish Meggett's Tree Canopy

Trees play a critical role in creating healthier, safer, and more connected communities. They clean our air, filter our water, and even decrease storm surge, flooding, and hurricane impacts; trees also provide shade and cool our denser residential areas by up to 10 degrees, which can help reduce electrical usage. Trees support wildlife and aquatic life by providing habitats and helping to keep waterways healthy. This ensures that ecosystem balance can be maintained, and biodiversity can thrive. Even as social and economic issues arise in our nation, trees continue to connect communities, cultures, and generations. Neighborhood trees have shown the ability to reduce stress, improve overall health and development in children, and encourage physical activity. And a healthy communitywide tree canopy fosters economic advantages as well as an increase in civic pride among residents. Every tree planted is a step in the right direction- can you imagine the beneficial impacts we could see if every Meggett resident planted even just one new tree?

Help Improve Water Quality in Our Community

Did you know that one of Meggett's main waterways, the Toogoodoo Creek, is currently closed to Shellfish Harvesting activity due to the presence of concerningly high levels of fecal coliform bacteria? Did you know that the Toogoodoo Creek has consistently been, in one form or another, listed as an impaired waterbody by SCDHEC for over a decade? Find out how you can help the Town of Meggett restore water quality levels in this vitally important tributary below.
  • Help us monitor stormwater runoff such as sediment from improperly managed construction sites, crop and forest lands, and eroding streambanks. Report any construction activities, especially projects involving tree removal, that fail to implement sediment and erosion control measures.
  • Report illegal actions such as unauthorized wetland fill or dredging activities to government authorities, like the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, SCDHEC, or the Town of Meggett. Report questionable logging practices to state and federal forestry agencies.
  • Pick up litter and dispose of it in appropriate trash containers. Keep surface areas that wash into our wetlands clean from pet waste, toxic chemicals, fertilizers, and motor oil.
  • Implement Low Impact Development (LID) practices at your home, such as bioretention facilities, rain gardens, vegetated rooftops, rain barrels and permeable pavements.
  • Use native species when planting trees, shrubs, and flowers to preserve the ecological balance of local wetlands. Preserve a natural buffer strip between your home and adjoining wetlands so that runoff and contaminants are filtered before reaching waterways.
  • Use "living shoreline" techniques that make use of plant roots to stabilize soil if you own waterfront property and your shoreline needs to be stabilized.
  • Use non-toxic products for lawn and garden care. Never spray lawn and garden chemicals outside on a windy day or on a day that it might rain and wash the chemicals into waterways.
  • If you have livestock, try to keep them and their excrement away from tidal wetlands/watersheds if at all feasible.
  • Have your septic system inspected and pumped, at a minimum every three to five years, so that it operates properly.
  • Participate in programs that help protect and restore wetlands. Contact local, state, or federal agencies, community groups, environmental organizations, and other non-government organizations.
  • Enjoy the scenic and recreational opportunities coastal wetlands offer, while preserving their integrity for future generations by minimizing the use of heavy equipment and staying in designated visitor areas where available.
