Business License DivisionThe Business License Division administers the Business License Ordinance. Every person or entity engaged or intending to engage in business is required to obtain a license based on business activity and gross receipts. Business license fees are due prior to commencing operations, and for annual licenses before May 1st of the new Business License year. Annual licenses run from May 1st - April 30th.
Construction-Related ContractorsConstruction Contractors are not eligible for Annual Business Licenses with the Town of Meggett.

Business Licenses ExplainedChapter 8, Businesses & Business Regulations, of the Town of Meggett Municipal Code, as authorized by SC Code Sec. 5-7-30, provides for the assessment of a business license tax against the gross income of business operations. This tax is an excise tax. The Town of Meggett assesses the tax based on the business classification according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Taxes are applied to all businesses operating in the Town, including those businesses whose operations are based outside the Town limits.

There are several federal and state requirements to meet if you plan to hire employees. You file a form SS-4 with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the IRS will assign an Employer Identification Number (EIN) to your business. You will then be liable for federal withholding taxes and FICA. The toll-free number to order the SS-4 is (800) 829-FORM (3676).

Retail Licenses are required by some businesses and are issued by the South Carolina Department of Revenue. There is a branch office in Charleston and they may be contacted at (844) 898-8542 for information on these and other State required licenses and permits.
Restaurants, grocery stores, and other businesses that handle food must be approved by the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control (SCDHEC) prior to operation. If any alcohol is served, an Alcohol Beverage License (ABL) is required by law. Many other professions and contractors must also be licensed by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR).
To work in the Town of Meggett, contractors must obtain a State Contractor's or Home Builder's license prior to approval for a Town Business License. You may contact the State Contractors Board at (803) 896-4834 for Residential Contractors, or (803) 896-4686 for Commercial Contractors, for more information.
