Business License Division

The Business License Division administers the Business License Ordinance. Every person or entity engaged or intending to engage in business is required to obtain a license based on business activity and gross receipts. Business license fees are due prior to commencing operations, and annually on April 30th prior to the May 1st start of each Business License year.

Construction Contractors are not eligible for Annual Licenses. If you are a construction-related company and are applying for a license in order to pull a Building Permit, please use the Construction Contractor Application (available here).

New Business Application Process

NOTE: If the physical address of your business is located outside the Town limits of Meggett, your Business License application will not typically require Town department reviews (unless there are special circumstances involved); you may skip to the bottom of this page for the application.

Are you planning on starting a new business or moving your existing business to the Town of Meggett?

If so, the following checklist is a convenient tool that outlines some of the most important steps that are required. It’s important to note that this list is not exhaustive, and depending on your situation, other requirements may apply. Representatives from the Business License Division and the Zoning & Planning Department are available to assist you, so please call or come in to discuss your plans with a Town Staff member if you have any questions.

Have you verified that your physical address is actually within the Town limits?

Our rural area can be quite a puzzle when it comes to finding out jurisdiction: some properties are in the Town of Meggett but the property right next to it could be Unincorporated Charleston County or in the Town of Hollywood. A quick way to make sure that your address is actually within the Town limits is to check Charleston County's Geographical Information System (GIS) Map. Once you open the map viewer, use the search box in the upper left corner to find your address. Then, open the Layers panel > Base Layer > and then be sure to check the Municipal Boundaries sublayer. The sublayer beneath Municipal Boundaries, Zoning Districts, is helpful also to determine the Zoning of your address if it is within Town limits!

Have you confirmed that your business activity is an allowed use in your Zoning District?

§4.10, Table of Permitted Uses, in the Town's Zoning and Land Development Regulations (ZLDR) contains a list of common land uses and indicates whether a use is allowed (By Right, Conditionally, or by Special Exception) in a specific Zoning District. For uses that are not included on the list, the Town's Zoning Administrator is authorized to make a Use Determination based on the Definitions contained in Chapter 17 of the ZLDR or require that the use be processed under the guidelines of a Planned Development or Special Exception.

Does your business qualify as a Home Occupation?

Or will you need to complete the Site Plan Review Process?

If your business is an allowed use in the Zoning District but does not qualify as a Home Occupation, you may be required to complete the Site Plan Review Process. Site Plan Review is a process used to examine all proposed developments and redevelopments, except for single-family residential uses, for the purpose of ensuring compliance with Town, County, State, and Federal requirements. The SPR Committee consists of representatives from various agencies who will address issues pertaining to the project including, but not limited to, zoning, building codes, health standards, traffic/highway regulations, and drainage/road requirements.

Have you received your Zoning Permit or Certificate of Occupancy?

Final approval in the form of a Zoning Permit authorizing the Home Occupation or a Certificate of Occupancy authorizing the commercial activity is required prior to applying for a Business License.

If you have completed all of the above steps, you are now ready to apply for your Business License!

There is a 3.3% (plus $0.30) service fee on all debit and credit card transactions.

The processing fee is assessed by a third party and is not collected by the Town of Meggett.
