PRTC 7 Stage Infrastructure Build
The Town of Meggett is working with Palmetto Rural Telephone Cooperative (PRTC) to bring fiber optic internet services to much of the Meggett area. PRTC is a locally owned telecommunications/technology provider that has served the South Carolina Lowcountry since 1951. They are committed to providing excellent customer service along with state-of-the-art technologies and service for today's advanced consumer. PRTC's 7 stage infrastructure process to bring fiber optic internet services to our residents consists of permitting, directional boring/plowing/open trench construction of the conduit, pulling fiber optic lines, installing the pedestals, splicing the fiber optic lines, service drops to the home or business and install of the services and equipment.
Stage 1: Permitting
PRTC's infrastructure is located in the right of way of State and County roads, DHEC-OCRM Critical area, and private property. Permits are often required before they can begin their installation process.
Stage 2: Directional Boring/Plowing/Open Trench Construction
Once all permitting is received and utility locates are completed, the next stage of the infrastructure build is to bore the conduit underground.
Stage 3: Fiber Optic
Once the orange conduit has been bored underground, PRTC will pull the fiber optic lines through the conduit.
Stage 4: Pedestals
Depending on how rural the area is, pedestals will be placed every 2-4 houses. Pedestals are the smaller green plastic boxes near the road.
Stage 5: Splicing
Splicing is when the fiber optics in the pedestals are connected to an active source of service.
Stage 6: Drops
When the service is brought to the home or business that is considered a drop. Within a few days of the drop being completed, a PRTC representative will call to schedule a home or business service set up. Existing accounts with PRTC will have drops done automatically. If you have not set up services yet with PRTC, you will have to contact them.
Stage 7: Install
Once your drop is completed, PRTC will schedule your in home service install. If you have not signed up for service, contact PRTC at 843-538-2020 . Signing up after the drops are completed will delay your install.
